Location: Fox and Feather Pub, - 283 Elgin Street, Ottawa
Date of Event: October 25, 6:00 p.m.
Event Details: Science in Society: For Better or for Worse? Scientific and technological discoveries have changed the world. Others, however, have had negative repercussions, with ongoing and serious consequences for people and the environment: we now live with a hole in the ozone layer, pesticides in our foods, and superbugs. Will new discoveries be for better or for worse? Although scientific advances offer hope towards solving some of our current global challenges, can science hope to patch up all the world’s ills? Or will science contribute to more catastrophic results, taking the planet to the point of no return? Are the potential consequences serious enough that we should put the brakes on research? And how can we ensure that new research is and will be used wisely? Do you have an opinion? Join us for drinks, discussion, and debate.

These events are live streamed and can be viewed at specified event times at http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/en/Outreach/General_Public/Science_in_the_Pub/   Upcoming PI Science in the Pub presented as part of Canada's Science and Technology Week How Does Science Work? One of humanity’s defining traits is to be deeply curious about the world around us. We’ve all looked up at the night sky, marvelled at rainbows, and been awed by the power of lightening. We’ve also wondered how these and other natural phenomena work. This curiosity-driven process of investigation of the world lies at the heart of science. Throughout history, it has driven scientists to develop new ideas about how nature works and then test them in experiments. Successful ideas have led to increasingly accurate and wide-ranging predictions about world. They have also yielded technologies that have transformed our daily lives. Science’s impact on the world has been monumental. But how does the process of science actually work? How does this field of endeavour progress over time? How do successful new theories develop, become accepted and replace existing ones? Join host Damian Pope, and Perimeter Institute Researchers Louis Leblond, Itay Yavin and Astrid Eichhorn for a thought-provoking evening of science and ideas. Live streaming of this event will be available at http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/en/Outreach/General_Public/Science_in_the_Pub/   For more information, visit perimeterinstitute.ca/outreach
