Dr Nathalie Ross:
We know we need safe and clean water for our survival.
Much of earth's water is found underground and this groundwater is important for ten million Canadians because they rely on it for their drinking water supply. And since groundwater is part of the water cycle, it’s also the health of our streams, rivers, and wetlands that depend on it.
But groundwater is susceptible to pollution; for instance from a leakage of an underground petroleum product reservoir. With scientists, we find that we can develop green technologies to tackle this important problem. And it works! By stimulating the natural bacteria in groundwater to use those petroleum products and transform them into harmless products for the ecosystem. And it's very encouraging to find a solution to a problem like this.
