Statement from the Chief Science Advisor on third-party issue advertising during an election

In response to the recent media coverage on third-party issue advertising during an election, Elections Canada has published a statement to clarify the issue:

CEO Statement Regarding Third Party Requirements on Issue Advertising

In brief, the law in question relates to paid advertising during an election, for which, in certain cases, there can be a requirement to register with Elections Canada. The law does not prevent individuals or groups from discussing issues or publishing material.

The law also does not relate to scientific research or standard scientific activities, such as public communication of science, attending academic conferences or publishing peer-reviewed papers.
