An open letter to the research community

June 2018

We are pleased to inform you that the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) will now ask all applicants to grant, scholarship, and fellowship programs to provide information on their age, gender, Indigenous identity, and/or status as a member of a visible minority group, and/or as a person with a disability.

Canada is at its best when we welcome all talented people to be part of the science and research community. The federal granting agencies are committed to strengthening equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) to make Canada a world leader in research and development in engineering and the natural sciences, health sciences, and social sciences and humanities.

In accordance with the direction set out by the Canada Research Coordinating Committee, one of our top priorities is to engage the research community in program changes and initiatives that remove barriers faced by under-represented and disadvantaged groups.

All federal granting agencies are working closely to harmonize, coordinate and integrate data collection so that each agency is equipped to report back to Canadians on the progress of our programs in fostering EDI and on how we design new measures to further that progress.

This is a collaborative effort that includes all members of the research community. We look forward to working with you to ensure that the future of Canadian research is equitable, diverse and inclusive.

More information is available on the page Self-Identification Data Collection in Support of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
