Cultural Heritage Science (CHS)

Cultural Heritage Science

The Cultural Heritage Science (CHS) Hub will help preserve and protect Canada’s stories, traditions, and cultural artifacts for future generations. Through research, innovation, and shared stewardship, it will lead the way by studying and preserving the artefacts that define and connect us as Canadians.

Science priorities

  • Facilitate access to collections of artefacts, historic objects, including art, cultural objects, and natural history specimens
  • Support Indigenous communities in caring for cultural objects and braiding Indigenous knowledge systems with conservation research and practices
  • Identify and address emerging risks to cultural heritage

Scientific facility

  • Gatineau, Quebec: The site for the CHS facility was announced in August 2025. Procurement planning is underway, with a request for proposal expected in fall 2025 and final selection of a proponent by fall 2026.
